Free Parking
Free parking for coaches and cars is along the road directly opposite the church.

Easy Access
There is level wheelchair and pushchair-friendly access from the road outside into the church. There is a step from the nave into the chancel, but access is provided via a ramp in the north aisle.

Hearing Loop
There is a hearing loop throughout the church, in use for services, and available during tours if required.

Toilet Facilities
There is a toilet available when the church is attended by volunteers.

Visitor Reception Area
When you arrive at the church, the lights activate automatically. To your left, just beyond the font, you will see a monitor inviting you to play the 3 minute introductory film - this is an excellent place to begin your tour, as the film invites you to travel through time, taking you on a journey which begins some 150,000 years ago. There are two further displays, one with images of the Conservation & Restoration Project in 2016/7, and one with a welcome message from the Vicar. You can help yourself here to a free adult or children's guide to the church, or purchase the official 40 page Guide filled with images for £3.

Access the Digital Guide
At the conclusion of the film, you will see instructions for accessing the Digital Guide to the church on your own smartphone or other device, which has several pages of audio-video content: In your 'Settings' menu under 'wifi' select 'St John's App'; then in your browser (Safari or Chrome, NOT Google), type 'go.now' in the address bar. This is only available in the church. A selection of videos from the Guide are available to view on this website - go to 'Video Guide' under 'History', and 'Wall Paintings'.

Activate the Projections
Both the Digital and Print Guides provide instructions for activating the projections of the recreated wall paintings in the nave - there is a button on the shelf of the rear pew to your right as you stand in the nave (the central part of the church) opposite St Christopher. Press either edge of this button once until it clicks, and watch as the paintings of St Catherine magically reappear on the north wall of the nave. Press this button a second time and a recreation of the 'Doom' will appear above the Chancel arch. These will switch off automatically after 3 minutes.

School Curriculum Materials & Lesson Plans
These lesson plans and resources are designed to be used as stand-alone lessons to fit in some local history to your Key Stage 2 British history topics on the Romans and Anglo-Saxons (the first three lessons), or to be used as a whole for the local history topic. For a post-1066 topic, (e.g. a significant turning point in British history) the last few lessons cover topics such as the Tudor reformation, the industrial revolution and the twentieth century World Wars.

There are also many hands-on activities that have been designed for families but could be run within the lessons to make them more practical and will be referenced where that is the case.

The lessons could be undertaken without visiting the church, but we recommend, if you can, trying to take your class/es on a visit to the church. Please contact the church to organise this. Volunteers will be delighted to do a special guided tour for schools and to run some practical making activities. There are also recording activities designed for visiting youth groups that could be used by older children on a visit to the church.
